Phoenix, AZ - Grand Canyon University head women’s soccer coach Stevie Gill today announced that two student-athletes have joined the squad for the upcoming 2013 season, the first for the Antelopes as members of the Division I Western Athletic Conference.
Megan Richardson, a 5-4 defender and central midfielder from Tucson, Ariz., was a Tucson Citizen First Team All-Southern Arizona selection in 2012-13 for Sabino High School. She was also tabbed as a First Team Southern Arizona Division II and All-State Division II Honorable Mention selection during her senior season, when she was also named her high school’s team MVP.
“Megan is a hard working defensive midfielder that will help solidify the midfield,” said Gill. “She is a quiet player that goes about her business and makes others around her look good. From a team dynamic standpoint, Megan will do very well for us as this understated confidence will prove valuable in the WAC next season. We are very happy that Megan will be joining us.”
Joanna Lagunas (front picture), a 5-4 midfielder/forward, joins the team from Canyon County, Calif., where she attended Golden Valley High School and was a four-year varsity letter winner. She was named as a Scholar-Athlete during each of her four seasons, and was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Year three times. Lagunas was a back-to-back All-Foothill League First Team selection in 2012-13 and was named Honorable Mention as a freshman and to the second team as a sophomore.
“Joanna is an attacking midfielder that will use her speed and passing ability to get players into scoring positions,” Gill added. “An avid goalscorer herself, she will score her fair share of goals this year penetrating defenses and making things happen on her own. She is another excellent player out of southern California that will strengthen an already solid midfield. We welcome Jojo to her new home here in sunny Phoenix.”
